MIDLAND - The Texas Rangers and Midland Police continue to comb through evidence after an officer fired shots killing a man in midland on Friday evening.

A 911 caller told dispatchers he saw a man with a gun to his head.

Officers pulled in to the 1600 block of north J Street to find 44-year-old Jerry Rheinlander.

Police say Rheinlander pointed a gun at two officers and threatened to shoot them and himself.

Officer Chris Lummus didn't take any chances, police say he fired one round killing Rheinlander just after seven.

Officer Lummus is on administrative leave pending the findings of the Texas Rangers and investigators with the Midland Police Department.

Neighbors tell NewsWest Nine, they're surprised.

They say Rheinlander hosted neighborhood barbeques and was always friendly.

His children declined to talk with NewsWest Nine.
