MIDLAND - Midland Memorial Hospital is now collecting umbilical cord blood.

Hospital officials say cord blood has a lot of blood making cells which can be used to treat leukemia and lymphoma patients as an alternative to getting a bone marrow transplant.

Midland Memorial Hospital is the 12th to join the Texas Cord Blood Bank, which collects the cord blood.

Parents can donate for free.

Officials say most patients who benefit from cord blood are children.
