UNDATED (AP) - Iraqis are outraged that an ex-soldier from Midland, Texas, has been spared the death penalty in the rape of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and murder of her and her family.
A life sentence for former Pfc. Steven Dale Green was automatic after a federal jury in Paducah, Ky., failed to agree on a death sentence.
The father of the 24-year-old former soldier, John Green, called the sentence the "better of two bad choices." But Baghdad schoolteacher Haidar Kadom called it "a mockery of Iraqi rights."
He says that if an Iraqi had been convicted of raping and killing a female American soldier, "he would be regarded as a terrorist and would be sentenced to death."
