Hobbs Commissioner Wants Salaries Made Public

HOBBS, N.M. (AP) - A Hobbs commissioner wants an economic development organization that receives nearly two-thirds of its budget from public funds to release a list of salaries for its employees.

Commissioner Carl Mackey says the public has a right to know what the Economic Development Corporation of Lea County pays its employees.

Economic Development Corporation president and chief executive officer Bethe Cunningham says the group is a private entity that should not have to meet the city's requirement for full financial disclosure.

The nonprofit organization receives much of its funding from Hobbs and Lea County taxpayer dollars.

For the 2009-10 budget year, the corporation has requested $261,000 from Hobbs and $360,000 from Lea County, totaling $621,000, or about 66 percent of its nearly $944,000 budget.
