Officials Asking Texans to Use Discretion Before Going to ER

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Health experts in Texas say people with flu-like symptoms should use discretion and not automatically head for emergency rooms.

Some schools in Texas have closed due to the swine flu.  The Texas Department of State Health Services on Tuesday cited reports of periodic overcrowding of hospital emergency rooms.

The agency says many people showing up in hospital emergency rooms "may have nothing more than seasonal allergies or mild colds."  The primary symptoms of the flu known as H1N1 have been a fever above 101 degrees, plus a cough and sore throat.

Children under age 5 and adults with other health problems that can put them at higher risk, if they get the flu, are advised to contact a doctor or other health care professional.
