NewsWest 9

HOWARD COUNTY - Firefighters in Howard County have been monitoring the site of a fire that started Thursday for hot spots to make sure it does not flare back up.

Crews spent Thursday afternoon and evening battling the grass fire that was started by a downed power line.

The fire charred some 400 acres before crews were able to get the upper hand. The fire started around 1:00 Thursday afternoon south of Interstate 20 near Cauble Road west of the Big Spring airport.

Buildings, ranches and oil field equipment were threatened for a time by the blaze which was named the "Chamnes Fire." No buildings were burned by the fire however.

The Texas Forest Service assisted local departments with ground and air units from Midland and Fort Stockton.

No one had to be evacuted because of the flames and no injuries have been reported.
