GREENWOOD - Crews have gotten a large grassfire near Greenwood under control.

The fire broke out near County Road 120 around 3:00 Friday afternoon. Crews from the Texas Forest Service, the City of Midland, Northeast Midland County, Martin County and Greenwood all responded.

Some 100 homes along County Road 120 were evacuated near Ranger Estates Friday afternoon. Two out buildings were burned, but the homes were all saved. Residents were allowed to return to their homes after the fire was more than 80 percent contained Friday evening.

At one time the fire was three miles long and about one mile wide. The blaze consumed over 1000 acres. Several petroleum flow lines caught fire causing a dangerous situation for fire crews.

Three air tankers from Fort Stockton and a ground task force, which included heavy equipment, were also called in to help fight the flames.

It is unknown what started the fire.
