1 killed, 1 injured in crash on BI-20

DPS says the driver failed to yield to oncoming traffic and tried to turn in front of the other truck.

MIDLAND COUNTY, Texas — DPS is investigating a crash that took place just after midnight on May 8.

The crash took place on Business I-20 in Midland County.

According to DPS, Miguel Ortiz, 70, was driving a truck east in the turning lane of BI-20.

Another truck was traveling westbound at the same time.

Ortiz failed to yield right of way and attempted to turn in front of the other truck, resulting in the trucks colliding.

Ortiz was taken to Midland Memorial Hospital for his injuries where he reportedly stable. DPS says it was unknown if he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

His passenger, Silvia Veronica Cortez Chavez, 50, was killed in the crash and pronounced dead at the scene. DPS says she was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the other truck was not injured.

No further information is available and DPS is still investigating.
