CMPD preparing security for CIAA related events

Police say this year's shooting involved rival rap performers in Charlotte for CIAA related events. A 41-year-old man was shot in the leg by a stray bullet.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- An overnight shooting in uptown Charlotte is highlighting concerns about violence during the CIAA tournament.

Police say a man was shot by a stray bullet, after a large fight outside the Palace Nightclub involving rival rap performers.

It comes after gunfire erupted during last year’s tournament with a rapper claiming he was targeted.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says they’ve been focused on feuds between entertainers for this year’s event.

Last year, rapper Young Dolph, claimed he was targeted by 100 gunshots during last year’s CIAA tournament.

Others in the music industry are now speaking out against the violence.

“It starts with putting the guns down,” said a man who goes by the name Brother Pryce.

Brother Pryce tells NBC Charlotte he produces several music genres, including hip hop.

“I think it really gives the game a black eye for all the up and coming local artists,” said Brother Pryce.

Derrick Chambers, who drives a food truck, is worried about his safety.

“It’s horrific, it makes me kind of scared and weary when I go out at night,” said Chambers, owner of Mama Vi’s Mobile Catering.

Police say the shooting started with a fight inside the club and then spread to the parking lot. However, the club’s consultant denied the dispute began inside the business when speaking with NBC Charlotte.

Meanwhile, police say they’ve been monitoring the performers coming to Charlotte for the tournament.

“To see if there is any kind of beef going on between entertainers,” said Major Gerald Smith with CMPD.

Young Dolph is expected to return during this year’s event, while others call for an end to violence.

“We have to do something about this because it’s getting out of hand,” said Brother Pryce.

The man who was shot suffered non-life threatening injuries. So far, no arrests have been made.
