HOWARD COUNTY - A fiber optic network could soon be coming to Howard County.

The Big Spring Economic Development Corporation gave the green light on the project that will put them on the same communication level as a big city.

Fiber optic lines can carry huge amounts of data.

Most businesses in larger cities are already on this network and if fiber optic lines come to Howard County, it's expected to attract new businesses. It's the best of the best when it comes to communication.

"Certainly businesses today require state of the art interconnectivity and it can give us that ability if those businesses need that capability, we will be able to offer those," Terry Wegman, Executive Director of the Big Spring Economic Development, said.

That's why the Big Spring Economic Development Corporation decided to pursue the project with West Texas Telecommunications.

"Fiber optics increase the bandwidths so that different entities can communicate better with each other. It allows streaming of audio and video those kinds of things currently we don't have bandwidth to do those kinds of things," Wegman said.

Now, West Texas Telecom will apply for a grant to pay for the fiber optic network, if approved, they'll deal with the loan and the project.

"The project for Howard County is a little over $140,000," Wegman said.

West Texas Telecommunications will apply for the grant later this month.
