Lovington Grassfire Blamed on Wind, Arcing Power Line

Staff Report
The Associated Press

LOVINGTON, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say an arcing power line was responsible for igniting a wind-whipped grassfire that burned 6,772 acres and forced the brief evacuations of 7 homes north of Lovington.

Dozens of firefighters battled the strong winds Wednesday afternoon to contain the blaze, which was at least 10 miles long and three-quarters of a mile wide.

Lovington Fire Chief James Williams says the fire, dubbed the Etchevery Fire, burned from N.M. 457 west of Lovington to Reed Road, about four miles north of the community.

State Forestry spokesman Dan Ware says no one was injured.
