Salvation Army Shelter in Big Spring at Full Capacity

BIG SPRING - Freezing temperatures force the homeless to fill Big Spring shelters to the brim. Every available inch of the Salvation Army shelter is being used to help keep them warm, but more people means the shelter needs more supplies.

With so many of the homeless trying to stay warm this winter the Salvation Army Shelter is full and in need of some help for themselves.

The shelter in Big Spring can only take in 24 homeless people. That is 18 men and 4 women, but Lodge Manager Keith Conner says they have reached their max capacity.

"I hate to turn anyone down as of last night I had 4 guys that came in and I only had bed space for 2 so I didn't turn them away." Conner said.

They believe that they will be maxed out again and they will need cots to accommodate the extra people coming in.

"Probably later today we will get some cots in so we have more space to facilitate those that are coming in," Conner said.

Because so many people are staying at the shelter and the donations are down they are low on their hygiene products and sometimes they have to use their own money to buy the products.

If you would like to donate to the Salvation Army, you can drop off the donations at the shelter or at the Salvation Army Office.
