
WEST TEXAS - The unemployment rate continues to rise in West Texas. New numbers released Friday from the Texas Workforce Commission show that the Texas economy lost thousands of jobs in May.
The unemployment rate in Odessa is now 7.8%. That is up from 6.6% in April.
Midland's unemployment rate rose to 5.2%. The Tall City's unemployment rate was 4.5% in April.
The state's unemployment rate now stands at 7.1%.
Lubbock has the lowest unemployment at 4.6%. The McAllen area has the state's highest unemployment at 9.4%.
Last year, West Texas has some of the lowest unemployment figures in the state. In May 2008 the Midland unemployment rate was 2.7% and Odessa's was 3.1%.
