Big Spring community rallies for veteran’s funeral

No one was expected to attend his funeral, but the city made sure he wasn’t alone.

BIG SPRING, TX (KWES) - A Vietnam veteran was expected to be laid to rest on April 15 without any family at his side.

The Big Spring community came out in full force to make sure he wasn’t alone.

Michael James McGrath served in Vietnam and had no known family in the area, so community members and fellow veterans stepped up.

“[It’s a] showing of the brotherhood and showing respect to a man that served our county,” said veteran Edward Roach. [He’d] done his time in Vietnam, [we’ll] be here to show our support cause he didn’t have family or anything left."

McGrath was remembered as a man who loved his country and community.

His funeral arrangements were paid for and made by his mother who did so before she died.
