Toddler dies; Family says he shot himself

JACKSONVILLE, FL (WJXT/CNN) - A neighborhood is in shock and pain after a tragedy.

Jayden James Piedra, a 2-year-old boy, died over the weekend after family members said the boy accidentally shot himself.

His mother is taking the news hard, according to the family.

Police have confirmed the child died and there are no outstanding suspects.

“One thing I could say is she loves her kids. That’s all she got. She doesn’t have any family down here. Her kids, she goes beyond and overboard for Jayden. ... He was like her heart,” said Leeadriea Farmer, a friend of the family.

Jayden reportedly grabbed someone’s gun inside an apartment. His mother was visiting a friend.

Police said they don't have any wanted suspects, and they're interviewing those involved.

“I’m hurt. I’m in shock. There’s really no explanation on how I can describe what I’m feeling. I’m torn right now because we are all she has. We are all her kids have,” said Toni Baber, the child’s godmother.

As the family waits anxiously for answers about what happened, police warned parents to keep guns secured.

Florida law requires gun owners to make sure their guns are secure.

Police said they must do one of the following; Keep the gun in a securely locked box or container, keep the firearm in a location which a reasonable person would believe to be secure, or secure the gun with a trigger lock.
