MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - With winter weather comes an increase in the need to stay warm. For some it’s blankets and heaters, but for others it’s a toasty fire burning in their fireplace.

Demand for firewood passing supply

Alldredge Gardens in Midland says it isn’t uncommon for them to go through two to three truckloads of firewood each year, but this winter there is definitely an increase in firewood being purchased.

“We’ve had a little bit bigger firewood season this year than we’ve had the last couple winters,” said Russell Johnson, Retail Manager for Alldredge Gardens. “I’ve already reordered twice and I’m about to reorder again.”

“We’ve had a couple of mild winters in a row and this winter hasn’t been that bad either, but for some reason we’ve really been moving the fire wood this year," said Johnson.

Alldredge Gardens sells a number of different types of firewood, with oak being the cheapest and most common. Mesquite, juniper and other types of wood are rarer but available as well.

Johnson says it isn’t a bad idea to stock up on firewood, as it can be difficult to pick up once a cold front comes through. Delivery is an available option, but same-day delivery isn’t a guarantee so it can be tricky to get the firewood when you need it.

If you’re worried about storing a lot of firewood in a small space, the business sells smaller packs of firewood in addition to the bigger bundles. These sizes are more fitting to those living in an apartment or a home with little storage opportunities.

No matter what your house size is, having some firewood as a backup in case your heater goes out isn’t a bad idea. Make sure to stock up before cold fronts hit during the winter.
