MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - A veteran and his family in Midland are enjoying a slightly brighter Christmas season thanks to the kindness of another former service member.

That’s after the local seasonal company Light Up the Permian Basin held a free giveaway for a Christmas lights package, open to any family of a veteran or first responder.

Marco Barreno, a fifteen year veteran of the U.S Airforce, won the Facebook contest.

Barreno lives on Stanolind Avenue in Midland and surprised his children with the Christmas display. His oldest son Joseph recounted the experience for him.

“When I first saw them they were really cool cause I didn’t know we were gonna get Christmas lights, and then after I knew who did them I really appreciated it,” said Joseph.

Barreno says he hopes the kindness granted to him by Light up the Permian Basin will help others to reflect on the sacrifice that our first responders and veterans make during the holidays.

“You just think about, especially during the holidays, all the men and women that are deployed, and first responders that are out on the streets protecting us while we’re celebrating and it’s just amazing,” said Barreno.
