Restaurant Report: 7 low performers in Permian Basin

MIDLAND/ODESSA, TX (KWES) - It was another disastrous week for health inspectors in the Permian Basin. After a week that consisted of nine low performers, the week of November 12 through November 16 saw seven low performers: five in Odessa and two in Midland.

Restaurant Report 12-6-18

Wall St. Bar & Grill at 115 E. Wall St. in Midland was cited for the following:

  • Scoops not being stored properly
  • Food containers in cooler not dated/labeled properly
  • Uncovered containers of food in cooler
  • No hot water for hand wash sink in kitchen area
  • No thermometers in reach-in cooler/walk-in freezer
  • Storing shrimp on bare ice
  • No certified food manager on site
  • Not all employees had food handler training

This resulted in the health inspector deducting 15 points from Wall St. Bar & Grill.

Cancun Bar & Grill at 223 W. Wall St. in Midland was cited for the following:

  • - No thermometers in cooler/freezers
  • - No paper towels for hand wash sink in kitchen area
  • - No soap or paper towels in hand wash sink in bar area
  • - Some food containers/bins not dated/labeled
  • - Open container of chips in trash can
  • - Open containers of food in cooler
  • - Open employee drinks in kitchen area
  • - Microwave oven dirty
  • - Scoops not being stored properly
  • - Box of corn tortillas on floor in freezer
  • - No certified food manager on site
  • - Not all employees had food handler training

This resulted in the health inspector deducting 16 points from Cancun Bar & Grill.

Taqueria El Gallo de Jalisco #3 at 1919 N. County Rd. W. in Odessa was cited for the following:

  • - No certified food manager on site
  • - Not all employees had food handler training
  • - Current health permit not posted
  • - Towels at hand sink
  • - Must use bleach in ware washing
  • - Some prepped food not date-marked
  • - No lids/straws on employee drinks
  • - Need vent for air ducts
  • - Need light covers
  • - Utensils not being stored properly
  • - Food not obtained from approved sources
  • - Soups not being stored properly
  • - Some food not being stored properly
  • - Some food not covered
  • - Gloves not being used while handling some food

This resulted in the health inspector deducting 27 points from Taqueria El Gallo de Jalisco #3. However, the health inspector went back a few weeks later and everything had been corrected.

  • - Not all employees had food handler training
  • - Must use sanitizer for cleaning utensils
  • - Gloves not always being used handling food
  • - Must wash hands after using wiping cloth
  • - Food manager certificate not posted
  • - Cooler in the freezer needs repairs
  • - Some food being stored on floor of cooler
  • - Some prepped food not labeled/date-marked
  • - Employee food not being kept separate from customer food

This resulted in the health inspector deducting 20 points from Cici’s Pizza.

Mama’s Kitchen at 1534 E. 8th St. in Odessa was cited for the following:

  • - Food manager certificate not posted
  • - Hand wash sink not equipped with soap, paper towels and hand sanitizer
  • - Some food in cooler not covered
  • - Some food in hot hold not covered
  • - Some food not labeled/date-marked
  • - Ventilation hood systems, filters need to be cleaned
  • - Current permit not posted
  • - Fountain drink machine dirty
  • - No food thermometers

This resulted in the health inspector deducting 17 points from Mama’s Kitchen.

Burri-Taco Express at 207 E. University Blvd. in Odessa was cited for the following:

  • - Employee wrapping burritos bare-handed
  • - Some food in freezer/refrigerator not labeled/date-marked
  • - Current permit not displayed
  • - Hand washing sink blocked by pan
  • - Scoops must have handles
  • - Scoops not being stored properly
  • - Some food not covered
  • - Food manager certificate not posted

This resulted in the health inspector deducting 19 points from Burri-Taco Express.

Sonic Drive-In at 8684 Andrews Hwy. in Odessa was cited for the following:

  • - Sanitizer level in wiping bucket too low
  • - One hand wash sink didn’t have hot water
  • - Another hand wash sink didn’t have sanitizer
  • - Some food containers not labeled
  • - Some food in coolers/freezers not covered
  • - Not all employees had food handler training
  • - Back door propped open
  • - Dumpsters and grease recycling lids left open
  • - Hand drier in public restroom not working
  • - Cold holds not keeping foods cool enough

This resulted in the health inspector deducting 15 points from Sonic Drive-In.
