Midland Chamber of Commerce: Teacher Adoption Program

MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - The Midland Chamber of Commerce is asking the public to take part in a new Teacher Adoption Program.

Officials from the organization like Nelwynn Barnett, the Executive Director of Chamber relations are hoping the program will make teachers feel more welcome within the community.

'"It really allows members of the community or individuals to show support and care and encouragement to a teacher in the school system," said Barnett.

The volunteers who take part in the program will agree to meet with their adopted teachers at least once a month for a small get together such as lunch or coffee.

One teacher that has already been adopted is Demetria Schrock, the first year educator teaches child care learning at Midland Lee high school.

Schrock says while she finds teaching enjoyable, it can be a tough profession at times.

“You know sometimes the kids swear at you and things like that,” said Schrock.

Which is why she didn’t hesitate to sign up for the program when she heard about it.

“It’s awesome we talk through email or text just things like how’s you’re day is going or she’ll be like hope you have a good day,” said Schrock.
